How do Nannies feel
about appreciation?
It is the single biggest complaint nannies have about their employers
"They never tell me I'm doing a good job or thank me for straightening up
or doing the extra errand they asked me to do, etc." Being a nanny means
being very isolated. Everyone needs to know they are doing a good job and
the only people to really tell them that is their employers. Here is one
nanny's words on the topic.
"I am treated with respect and admiration. I am treated not as an employee
but rather as a family member. I am told how much I am appreciated and
needed regularly. I am given little niceties and extra cash bonus for a
job well done. I even have to laugh because when my bosses go out of town
and bring something back for the children, something is also brought back
for me. I am remembered on all holidays and birthday (trust me that is a
nice extra) and I remember each of them. I am happy to do the little
extras for them and go out of my way to make sure that I in return do
little niceties for them. I consider them to be a extended part of my
family." Doesn't' everyone want a Nanny who feels like this about
"her" family?
How do I show nanny my
appreciation?
If you're asking yourself this question, you are one step ahead of the
game. Some employers never realize they should show their nanny that they
appreciate her until she's gone. Nannies are a sentimental group. There
are many ways to show your nanny she's an important part of the family.
Here are some great ideas from parents and nannies. If you have another
great idea, be sure to email it to us right away. We'll be sure to post it
to this page. And visit our Nanny Gift Shop for some one-of-a kind Nanny
gifts.
The daycare my children attend have been doing a teachers appreciation all
week. I highly doubt it's only them. You could do something like that.
Your children could paint her a picture, maybe handprints or feet prints that she could take home. A poem that's framed (Children Learn What They Live comes to mind) would show how special you know she is to your children's future.
Another idea that I can think of, besides crafts, would be a framed
picture of the children. This is one of my favorite gifts!
On the more expensive side...you could buy her a camera! Tell her you know
your kids mean as much to her as she means to them, and thought she might
like to capture moments throughout her day. Maybe a scrapbook for her own
pictures, or a beautiful photo album.
Gift Certificates to somewhere you know she likes...dinner...movies...the spa, somewhere she can unwind. ~ I too am a pushover for something sentimental. I have a file of all the wonderful cards and thank you notes that both of my employing families have given me over the years. A photo session of your nanny with the children could be a wonderful gift that she could treasure always.
I also like gifts that celebrate my profession, one year for my birthday my boss gave me a key chain that said #1 nanny, we love you. It was made out of those ceramic beads, and I hung it on my mirror in my car, so that even on the worst days, I could be reminded that my family loved me.
I'm a mushy person to begin with, but my favorite way of saying thanks is to write it in little notes. If your kids are old enough, they could write the notes if not, you could sit down with them for a few minutes and have them say what their favorite activities or things that your nanny does with them. And then tuck them into places that she will find them, but maybe not all at once. In drawers or the children's room. The sweetest thing that my family did for me when I was with them, was put a picture of me, framed in artwork done by the kids in each of their rooms that said, "My Favorite Nanny" Considering I was their 13th nanny, that meant a lot! Good Luck and just remember to tell her how much you appreciate her. Often just that little amount of encouragement can make the biggest difference in a day.
Would you consider paying for a membership for your nanny into NAN, INA or a local nanny support group? Therefore they would be able to be involved with other nannies. Have any employers thought of giving a gift membership to their nanny? as the president of a nanny support group, I have several members who don't have the time or the interest to get involved but like getting our newsletter to read up on things etc....the newsletters of my support group and the NAN one are very useful in my opinion and would be a great tool for any nanny to have.
Should I
give my nanny something for mother's day?
Absolutely, it would probably mean the world to her.
I found a card at the drug store for my nanny under the section "for
child's caregiver" so, there must be plenty of people who also wish their
nannies a happy mother's day.
